Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) Website

JMA is a great site for everything about weather in Japan. It includes a great amount of snow forecast data, current conditions and a great database of historical snowfall data and much of it is in English.

For a simple forecast, you can click here and then drill down to the area you are interested in. So is a lot of different ways that JMA presents it forecasts. I encourage you to dig around the site and find the presentation style but best suits your requirements.

Another great source is JMA’s Nationwide Alerts for volcanoes, high waves, thunder storms, frost, avalanches, dry air, and more. Most importantly is the category for heavy snow. That’s right, click and see instantly see where heavy snow is forecast. The image to the right displays a heavy snow warning for the northern part of Nagano, including Hakuba, issued on Mar 9, 2024. Clicking on the map allows you to access the data in table format or view an animated version over time for a 24-hour forecast.

You will also find a great array of historical data for download and analysis. For instance, here you can view total snowfall per month at one of many nationwide weather stations since 1953 (the link provided is for Nagano Prefecture). There is a total of 14 different historical measurements provided. For instance, take a look at Monthly Mean Air Temperature. Unfortunately, it is very clear that winters are getting warmer. If you further average the temperature per decade, you will see an alarming trend unfortunately, too.

JMA will also give you seasonal forecasts. Here you will find the probability of above or below average temperatures for all of Japan. As of Mar 9, 2024, forecasts for average air temperature are provided as far out as Jun to Aug, 2024. In years of El Nino in Japan, air temperature is normally higher than average and precipitation (and snow) is lower than normal.

Based on the above heavy snow warning, you can use other resources to check out the snow. For instance, you can view one of many webcams in Hakuba. Here is the parking lot webcam at the foot of Hakuba Happo One confirming the heavy snow forecast warning is spot on.

Diving back into snow-forecast.com, you can see that the snow will continue for the balance of Mar 9 and taper of Mar 10 and then a bluebird on Mar 11!
